Its technical ambition helped redefine global perceptions of Japanese animation, establishing AKIRA as a cornerstone of cyberpunk cinema and a lasting influence on filmmakers, animators, designers and game creators worldwide.

More than 160,000 hand-painted animation cels were created for the film—roughly two to three times the artwork used in a typical animated feature of the period.

Its 2,212 individual shots gave AKIRA an extraordinary level of movement, detail and cinematic complexity for a hand-drawn production.

The artists used a palette of 327 different colours, with approximately 50 shades created specifically for the film to capture Neo-Tokyo’s neon lights, shadows and night-time atmosphere.
