On the mystical world of Thra, young Gelfling Jen is sent on a perilous quest to recover a missing shard of the Dark Crystal before the Great Conjunction of three suns. Joined by the courageous Kira and hunted by the grotesque Skeksis, Jen must heal the Crystal and restore balance to a world divided between light and darkness. Eerie, beautiful and wonderfully strange, Jim Henson’s handcrafted fantasy epic remains unlike anything else ever put on screen.

Fun, technical and wonderfully quirky facts

• Jim Henson and Frank Oz co-directed the film, taking the creative partnership behind The Muppets into much darker and more ambitious territory. Henson conceived the story as an entirely original fantasy world, while their many years performing together helped them manage the film’s extraordinarily complicated creatures and sets. 
• Henson and Oz were not simply behind the cameras. Jim Henson physically performed Jen and the Skeksis Ritual-Master, while Frank Oz performed Aughra and the wonderfully scheming Chamberlain. Separate actors later provided many of the characters’ voices. 
• The Chamberlain was one of the most elaborate puppets ever constructed, featuring 21 cable-controlled functionsand requiring as many as four additional operators to control his eyes, eyelids, eyebrows, beak and hands while Frank Oz performed the character from inside. 
• For an extra touch of Skeksis decay, their costumes were made from expensive silks, velvets, lace, fur and feathers—then deliberately torn apart, sprayed with paint and covered in simulated filth to make them look like a once-powerful ruling class rotting from the inside out.
